Last weekend in Puerto Peñasco we had a chance to meet and talk with Francisco Herrera, the chief engineer for the new Mayan Palace development now about to begin construction. Located east of Playa Miramar, the project encompasses 3,000 acres (over 1 million hectares). The first phase, whcih will start in January 1997, will include 95 villas, a hotel of 250 rooms, an 18-hole golf course, an access boulevard, and a hotel casino. Completion of the first stage is projected for 1999 or 2000.
The second stage will include a marina, an ecological reserve, and a second 18-hole golf course, as well as residential development. I was out at the site a couple of weeks ago and could see that the heavy equipment was already cutting in the new roads. I was told that part of the marina will eventually be available for other developers.
The company building the Mayan Palace has built other similar developments in Acapulco, Puerto Vallarta, Nuevo Vallarta, and Mazatlan over the past 10 years. Sr. Herrera, who is from Saltillo, Nuevo Leon, has worked for them since 1992.
This is a major development for Puerto Peñasco. We expect to be writing more articles as more information becomes available.
