Cyndi's Sea of Cortez

by Margaret Fleming

We had a very interesting interview last weekend with the two women who are running Cyndi's Sea of Cortez Rentals. This is a new business; it just opened in October 1996. It's located on Blvd. Juarez, near the Cholla Bay Road. You can recognize it by the giant blue marlin painted on the side of the building. The owner is Cyndi Jones, and her friend and co-worker is Cornelia Felix.

Cyndi's is a collection of multi-information services. Whatever you need, Cyndi and Cornelia can probably supply it. They do property management, arrange for cleaning, water plants, order in groceries for the first meal for returning homeowners, recommend restaurants and shops, and offer chauffeur services. If you need anything they haven't thought of yet, just ask.

Cyndi and Bruce, who is retired, came to Puerto Peñasco a little over a year ago. He loved just hanging out on the beaches, or going around town talking to people, eating out, and enjoying the relaxed atmosphere.

But Cyndi wasn't ready to retire. She loved living in Puerto Peñasco, but she wanted more activity. So she decided to start a business, and she saw a need for this one. She had been in the hotel and restaurant business in Arizona, and her skills are in dealing with people and following up on details. She recruited her friend Cornelia to help her. Cornelia's husband is Mexican, and she has lived here two years. She is bilingual, which is a great advantage. Actually she is trilingual, but she hasn't had much chance to use her German here.

Cyndi and Cornelia's main business activity is finding rentals, both short- and long-term, for visitors to Puerto Peñasco. In this endeavor, they sometimes have challenging requests. They told us of one customer who was so upset by the results of the U.S. elections that he refused to stay in the country one day longer. He came to Mexico and demanded that they find him a place to stay immediately.

But Cyndi and Cornelia do more than just arrange rentals. They will do an entire package for their customers, providing a schedule of events in Puerto Peñasco, and arranging reservations, transportation, whatever is needed. Cyndi loves being able to help people.

One of the things Cyndi and Cornelia did when they started the business was to investigate thoroughly the best places to buy needed items. Suppose you go to Rocky Point for a weekend at the beach and forget your beach towels. Cyndi can tell you where in town you can buy replacements. Or if you need film for your camera, fluid for your contact lenses, a battery for your car, whatever--just ask Cyndi or Cornelia.

This business is Cyndi's. Bruce is not officially connected with it, but she says he does good public relations for her. As he goes around town and socializes with people, he often mentions her services, and this brings her new customers. Cyndi's ad in El Futuro has been put onto the Internet, and at least one customer has already mentioned seeing it.
